Interxion signs four new Internet Exchanges in Europe

New peering points in France, Spain and the Netherlands help Interxion extend its dominant position

Interxion, Europe’s largest provider of carrier-neutral data centers and managed services, has announced that it now peers with four further Internet Exchanges in Europe. The recent signing of FreeIX in Paris, MAD-IX in Madrid, NL-ix in Amsterdam, and MG-IX in Hilversum, the Netherlands, means Interxion now hosts eleven Internet Exchanges across nine European countries. Interxion has also increased its provision of managed services to Frankfurt’s DE-CIX.

Internet Exchanges are non-profit organisations that act as national peering points. They concentrate links to the Internet and are located in secure data centers such as those run and managed by Interxion. By having a point of presence (PoP) for every major European Internet Exchange, Interxion now offers carriers and ISPs comprehensive access to national backbones and interconnection points in Europe. This is similarly attractive to large enterprises with pan-European communication needs. The additional IP traffic generated by Interxion’s carrier and enterprise customers also benefits the Internet Exchanges as it enables them to further develop their peering activities.

In Frankfurt, Interxion has also taken over parts of the system management of DE-CIX, which is housed within Interxion’s data centers. This means that Interxion is now responsible for managing the implementation of new customers at the exchange and providing performance monitoring of both switches. DE-CIX is one of the busiest Internet Exchanges in Europe, with up to 85% of German traffic passing through it.

“With a PoP from every major Internet Exchange in Europe, Interxion undeniably has the largest colocation footprint in the region. As a result, ISPs and enterprises can securely locate in an Interxion data center and have access to the major interconnection points in that country,” said Anthony Foy, group managing director, Interxion. “As Internet Exchanges are driven by the need for expertise in managing mission-critical equipment and applications, so their requirement for highly secure data centers and managed services is heightened. Our increased presence in DE-CIX demonstrates our commitment to maintaining the highest level of service to our customers.”

Interxion’s proactive collaboration with the Internet Exchanges helps sustain the development of communications infrastructure within major business centers in Europe. As a result, considerable improvements in the functioning and redundancy of the networks, and cost reductions for members of the Internet Exchanges are achieved.
